2021 Club Championship Round-Up

What can we say… what a weekend of golf at Farleigh!

Firstly, thank you to all members who took part in the 2021 Club Championship over the weekend. Despite the unpredictable British weather, we had more than 100 members each day tee it up and battle it out for the top spot. Special thanks to our very own starters, very much inspired by the great Ivor Robson, for their hard work on the tee over the weekend – as well as getting you all off on time, hopefully they provided some words of wisdom for the round ahead.

The etiquette, sportsmanship and golf from the first to last hole is a real testament to how good you have made this club today.

There were so many highlights; Paul Bennett recording a two on all par threes in round one, a real Farleigh first I’m sure. To put this into perspective, Tiger Woods once made a 10 on one par three at Augusta – two shots more than Paul played all four Farleigh par threes in one day. If you want lessons on how to play the Farleigh par threes, Paul is most definitely your man.

Looking at the Men’s Club Championship, 36 holes was not enough to separate the 2020 Club Champion, Rob Ditch, and Farleigh academy graduate, Alex Keefe, who tied on a score of 150 in regulation play. This opened the door for a dramatic four-hole playoff across first blue, seventh blue, eighth blue and finishing on the ninth red.

Alex hit a wayward tee shot on the first, which looked to have given Rob the advantage, but recovered well to equal Rob’s score of five. They stood on the second tee still tied and Alex hit shot of the day to secure a birdie and two-shot swing in his favour; he then followed with par on eight blue and nine red to become the 2021 champion. Thanks to Bryan Pitt & Alex Pink who caddied for Rob and Alex, playing their part as the action unfolded. Gentleman to the end, Rob Ditch was gracious in defeat as he congratulated Alex on his win on the final green.

Onto the Rose Bowl (Nett) competition. After a solid opening round of level par nett 72, a superb nett 70 was good enough to see Jack Flaherty claim top spot with a fantastic score of 142. Congratulations also goes to runner-up Anthony Brown who finished one stroke behind after weekend scores of 68 and 75 for 143.

The Ladies' Club Championship saw Tereza Russo crowned club champion for the second year running with a gross total of 164 for the two days. Veronica Marnell took the top spot in the Ladies' Handicap Competition with an impressive 147 total.

Huge congratulations to all winners over the weekend. In addition to funds on their club levy, the winners also enjoy additional prizes courtesy of our event sponsors, Footjoy.

A word on the golf course. Thank you to Kenny and his team for preparing the course to the highest standards from tee to green - Kenny was even out there himself with a squeegee when the rain descended.  The greens were superb and I’m sure helped shave a few shots off the scores.
